Catharina Goldnau

Catharina Goldnau mixes her own clay by adding organic materials, altering surfaces and the traditional ceramic composure of the clay, leading to uniquely textured works.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Catharina Goldnau grew up in rural northern Germany near the East German border. After a career as a French Immersion elementary teacher and raising four children, she pursued her passion for art through Toronto’s Central Tech Adult Art Program.

Her love of clay led her to Sheridan College, where she graduated in 2018. Today, Catharina works from her studios in Toronto and Beaverton. In 2021, she became President of Fusion Clay and Glass Ontario, supporting fellow clay and glass artists while continuing her own creative practice.

Catharina’s work explores the relationship between ceramics and nature. She often experiments with clay by incorporating organic materials, creating unique surfaces and textures. Her colourful garden sculptures, inspired by totems, are designed to complement and become part of outdoor spaces, while her larger indoor totems integrate living plants to create a dialogue between ceramics and vegetation.

Suitable for both indoor and outdoor settings, most pieces are frost-resistant and can remain outside year-round. Installation and delivery are available upon request.
