ABOUT THE ARTIST
Uxbridge multi-disciplinary artist Lisa Allen has returned to the playful practice of self-directed, creative exploration, first enjoyed in her youth. Her early life was influenced by a family of educators and artists, setting her on a path of learning and creativity.
Her love of drawing and painting led to a more serious and formal study of fine art and art history at U. of T. and Sheridan College. It was at this stage that she discovered the joy of sharing her creative ideas and inspiring others as equal to the making of art itself.
It became clear that teaching art would be a way to serve her two passions. As an elementary school teacher, she dedicated over 30 years to teaching art and inspiring budding artists.
The school setting connected her with an endless supply of like-minded, creative souls. As a full-time teacher and mom, Lisa’s time at the easel was reduced, but she always maintained it, vowing to return when priorities shifted.
Now, with a full career in teaching behind her, Lisa is reinventing herself, and life’s focus has returned to the exploration of picture-making in a variety of forms. Multi-mediums complement and inform one another in her work.
Painting, with its traditional roots, remains her primary mode of expression, allowing her to directly engage with all artistic elements. Embroidery, on the other hand, offers a contemplative and restrictive process that contrasts with painting, providing a unique narrative layer to her subjects.
Her pyrographic pieces, adorned with vibrant colors, showcase a deep appreciation for the materials and introduce original imagery.
Through these varied practices, Lisa aims to produce work that resonates with the beauty of the natural world, connecting viewers to her memories and experiences in a meaningful way.
