Judith Tinkl
Pattern, colour, structure and the way we see motivates Judith Tinkl's work which encompasses traditional quilts and various textile based constructions.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Judith Tinkl has been influenced and inspired by many artists, in particular African-American quiltmakers who work from a very non-European direction. They are not into strict repeats and straight edges. She has also learned a lot from looking at the work of Richard Anuskiewicz, Arthur Hoerner, Josef Albers and Brigit Riley.
She is fascinated with the phenomena of light and colour and the interactions of colours. She is inspired by the structures of nature, geometry, geometric puzzles, natural systems, and, of course, contemporary, historical and traditional textiles and, like a true child of the sixties, she feels most comfortable with non-objective abstract visual ideas.
She particularly likes using found material and objects. Buttons, beads, fabric scraps, old thread, etc.
Over her 60+ year career, she has exhibited widely, volunteered in many crafts and arts organizations and taught for 20 years at OCAD, as well as raising a family.
