ARTIST'S STATEMENT

  • I'm a jeans and sneakers kind of person, a bit of an aging hippie, so the purses I made all have a relaxed, bohemian vibe. The designs are simple and practical, with adjustable straps and lots of pockets, and the prints I create are simple, bold and graphic. Nothing fussy or frilly in my work, only natural fibres, conscientiously dyed, and everything I create can be worn with jeans.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Beautiful design doesn’t have to come at the expense of the environment. Nancy Newman uses natural and repurposed textiles wherever possible and always chooses materials with the smallest ecological footprint.

Sourcing textiles that are free from harsh chemicals and dyes means gorgeous, authentic designs that are better for you, better for the earth, better for all of us. You are sure to find something you love!

Nancy has been sewing and creating since she ran her own children's clothing manufacturing business in the late 80's. With a degree from the Textile Studio at Sheridan's School of Art and Design, and extensive experience in weaving, dye chemistry, pattern drafting, fabric structure and surface design, Nancy's funky and fun purses, totes and pouches are ideal for your casual dressing.

Uxbridge purse designer and creator Nancy Newman's interest in textiles "started with the Feminist Movement in the 70's, where attention was being paid to what was disparagingly called 'Women's Work', which was anything to do with textiles". We are delighted to feature Nancy along with her talented guest artist Mary Philpott at Studio 10 of the 2019 tour.
