Clay artist Jodie Hames creates a range of unique art pieces from functional works to whimsical sculptural creatures.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jodie received her training in Fine Art at Georgian College and graduated in 1996. She apprenticed as a potter with Barb Jackson of Parry Sound, then opened her own studio in 1999 just north of Parry Sound near Killbear Provincial Park.
Since 2012 Jodie and her family opened Clayworks Pottery in the village of Bethany, Kawartha Lakes
From functional items to wall hangings and whimsical sculptural creatures, Jodie’s signature style is recognizable through form, texture and her rustic colour palette.
Jodie is inspired by landscape, the natural world, gardening and country living. Motifs like jack pine trees, dragonflies, and sunflowers now farm animals define her style too.
Through handcrafted small batches, each piece takes on special qualities through the different processes and techniques Jodie uses such as carving, stamping, drawing and glazing.
The glazing process provides the opportunity to use painting and drawing skills. The combination of texture and lighting, give some works a painterly quality.
Jodie has continuously challenged herself technically and artistically, through commissions and special projects. Clayworks Pottery can be found at local shops and attractions around the Peterborough and the Kawartha Lakes area.
Her home studio and showroom are open by chance or appointment.
